Troubleshooting computers PC manufacturers have written diagnostic programs or diags that will interrogate the health of the hardware in a PC. Diagnostic programs will perform extensive checks on hardware devices such as the CPU, RAM, BIOS, CMOS, hard disks, input devices, output devices, and external ports. These programs are usually product specific, so you need to acquire the specific diagnostic program that has been written for the particular make and model of PC that requires checking. These programs are usually available on floppy diskette or CD. Some manufacturers will place a copy of diagnostic programs on the hard disk or in the firmware of PCs. In order to run this type of diagnostic software, it is usually required to hold down a particular sequence of keys on the keyboard (hot-key), or hold down a particular key when booting. |
