Preparing to Install Software

Before installing any software there are several things which should be checked in order to ensure that the installation goes smoothly. Some these are given below:

  • Back-up important data - data such as documents and system files should be backed up to another media or machine before Software Installation..
  • Free up disc space - If the disc space does not meet the requirements of the software being installed, delete unused files and directories, remove applications, such as games, which are not used any more. If there is still not enough room, a larger disc will have to be purchased.
  • Archive unused files - If the machine is on a network it may be possible to archive any unused files to online storage such as magneto optical drives or offline storage such as tape.
  • Permission - Permission from an administrator may need to be obtained in order to remove files from the hard disc.
  • Report Hardware - ensure that any hardware which does not meet the required specifications is reported to the correct authority.
  • Installation Order - Check the Installation order of the Software so that one piece of software does not overwrite any of another’s files.

The software installation plan must be agreed with the customer. A date and time must be set when all the required items are in one place, ready to carry out the installation.
