Application software
Application software is the term given to
programs that perform specific information processing tasks for users. These
programs are called application packages because they perform the processing
required for a particular purpose or application. Thousands of application
programs are available, as there are thousands of jobs that users require
computers to do.
Application software can be subdivided into two
categories, general-purpose and application-specific.
- General-purpose programs carry out
common jobs such as word processing, spreadsheet work, e-mail, database
management and presenting with graphics. Some
examples of common general-purpose applications are:

- Application-specific programs carry out
specific jobs particular to the business functions of an organisation. Such
applications include accounting, marketing, manufacturing, operations
management and human resources. Programs of this nature are developed
specifically around a particular need of an organisation. This type of
custom software is often described as bespoke software.
