IEEE 1394 port (Firewire or iLink)

The Firewire port was originally designed by Apple as a replacement for the SCSI bus, but has been further developed as a result of the need to transfer large amounts of Audio and Video data. It can transfer data at up to 400MB/ sec It was first implemented by Sony as link to their digital CamCorder in 1996. It's capabilities are such that it can support high-end and consumer audio/ video applications, home networking, non-linear Digital Video (DV) editing and 32 channel (or more) audio mixing. The standard can be implemented as circuitry on the motherboard, rare at the moment, or as a cable system. The cable system will have either a direct connection to the motherboard or via a PCI card. The devices will be connected via cables which use a Gameboy type connector.
