Hardware components of the PC As the capacity of operating systems and software application programs increased, the need for larger storage capacity for distribution of computer software to customers also increased. The Compact Disc - Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) is a removable storage device that meets this need and has become the standard media for software distribution. The CD-ROM works with removable, compact discs, simply referred to as CDs that are the same media as in the music industry. This removable media is twelve centimetres in diameter and can hold up to 74 minutes of music, but more importantly, 650MB of information. |
