Floppy drives

Generally all PCs are fitted with a 3.5-inch floppy drive these days. This storage device utilises 3.5-inch, removable floppy diskettes, or floppies. These floppy diskettes can hold up to 1.44MB of information. The floppy drive uses a motor to rotate the floppies on a spindle and read/ write heads that can move in and out to any position on the diskette as it spins. This capability is important as it allows the heads to access data randomly, as opposed to sequentially. The heads can skip from one position to another as required, without having to access the positions in between.

A write-protect tab is a standard feature on all floppies. It can be physically moved by sliding the tab to the write-protect position, opening a gap, preventing the disk from being erased or written to.
