Main Memory

Main memory in computer systems is the place to store data and programs for the CPU to process. Memory is distinguished from storage as random access memory (RAM). RAM comes in module form of Dual In-line Memory Module (DIMM) and Single In-line Memory Module (SIMM).

RAM is a large storage area for information being processed by the CPU. The CPU can hold small amounts of data needed to operate the computer in its internal registers but does not have the capacity to store large amounts of information. The CPU requires millions of bytes of space where it can hold and in turn manipulate information. This area is called main memory.
